GPA Calculator (credit-weighted)

GPA = the sum of (grade points × credits) for every course, divided by the total credits. Grades 4.0, 3.7, and 3.3 with credits 3, 4, and 2 give (12 + 14.8 + 6.6) ÷ 9 ≈ 3.71.

Up to 6 courses — leave unused rows blank. Use your own grade scale (4.0, 5.0, 20…).

Results are computed from your inputs and rounded for display. Verify important figures independently.

Enter each course's grade points and its credit hours — up to six courses, on whatever scale your institution uses. The calculator returns the credit-weighted GPA, total credits, and total grade points, all computed in your browser.

Formula & methodology

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits. A 4-credit course moves your average twice as hard as a 2-credit one — that weighting is the whole point. The calculator is scale-agnostic: 4.0-scale, 5.0-scale, or 20-point marks all work because only your own numbers enter the average.

Worked examples

  • Grades 4.0 / 3.7 / 3.3 with credits 3 / 4 / 2 → total points 33.4, credits 9, GPA 3.711.
  • 20-point scale: 16 (2 credits) and 12 (3 credits) → 68 ÷ 5 = 13.6.

Limits

Institutions differ on letter-to-point mappings, repeated-course rules, and pass/fail exclusions — check your registrar's conversion table before entering points, and leave excluded courses out. This calculator averages exactly what you enter; it does not apply any institution's special rules.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert letter grades to points?

Use your institution's official table — a common US mapping is A=4.0, A−=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0 and so on, but it is not universal. Enter the converted number as the course's grade points.

Does this handle cumulative GPA across terms?

Yes — enter each term's current GPA as the "grade points" and the term's total credits as the "credits", and the calculator returns the correctly weighted cumulative average.
